Lightning Tree is an early-stage deep-tech incubator, dedicated to advancing materials technologies through high-throughput experimentation, AI, and commercial expertise.
Ian Paget was commissioned to design a logo that embodies the company's sophisticated, high-tech approach and its commitment to translating scientific innovation into commercial value, initially focusing on lithium-ion battery technology.

Lightning Tree operates at the forefront of deep-tech innovation, collaborating with universities and research organisations to develop advanced materials. The startup distinguishes itself through its in-house expertise in high-throughput experimentation, artificial intelligence, and a robust commercialisation strategy. While its initial focus is on critical lithium-ion battery technology, Lightning Tree has ambitious long-term plans to expand its portfolio across a wider spectrum of advanced materials.
Lightning Tree targets three key audiences: buyers at customer companies (e.g., electric vehicle manufacturers), researchers seeking commercialisation avenues for their technologies, and venture capitalists and investors. The company's value proposition centers on being resourceful, effective, well-organised, and easy to work with, appealing to mid-career technical professionals, PhD-level academics, and finance-savvy investors who prioritise technical performance, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and financial return.

The goal was to create a logo that helps Lightning Tree stand out in the crowded world of deep-tech startups, while also building the kind of credibility needed to attract investment and grant funding.
At its core, the identity needed to feel trustworthy and capable, something that suggests the team can handle complex, technical work and deliver real-world results. Just as importantly, it had to bridge two worlds: speaking fluently in the language of science and engineering, while also signalling clear commercial value. The aim was to strike that balance between technical depth and business clarity, while still feeling exciting and forward-looking rather than overly corporate.
Visually, the direction took cues from established brands known for their clean, sophisticated, and technology-driven identities. These often rely on refined typography, subtle geometric structure, and restrained colour systems to communicate innovation without noise. The ambition was for Lightning Tree to sit comfortably alongside this level of work, projecting expertise, confidence, and reliability from the very first impression.
The final logo for Lightning Tree is built around a simple idea: a symbol that works on two levels. At first glance, it reads as a cloud with a lightning bolt. Look again, and you see a tree. That quiet shift in interpretation makes it more memorable, and gives it a bit of personality without overcomplicating things.
All of this is built from simple geometric forms, which helps keep it clean, modern, and easy to recognise. It’s designed to feel relevant to its audience, scientists, engineers, and investors, without trying too hard to be clever. The typography and colour palette support that same idea: confident, modern, and grounded in technology, while still feeling approachable and trustworthy.
Importantly, it’s been designed to work hard in the real world. Whether it’s on a slide deck, a website, an email signature, or social media, it stays clear and consistent, helping Lightning Tree present itself professionally wherever it shows up.

Ian Paget’s work for Lightning Tree delivers a clear, distinctive identity that helps the company stand out in a competitive deep-tech space. The logo communicates the core values of the business and reflects its focus on advanced, science-led innovation. It helps reinforce credibility with key audiences such as investors, research partners, and customers by presenting Lightning Tree as capable, focused, and technically grounded.
By translating complex technical work into a simple, considered visual identity, the logo supports the company’s positioning as it develops and commercialises new technologies.
After the project was completed, the client shared a very positive review:
