Conservation Evidence is a science-based resource from the University of Cambridge that helps conservationists make informed decisions using real-world evidence.
To support with global recognition and strengthen its visual identity, Ian Paget was commissioned to design a logo that reflects the organisation’s authority, purpose, and connection to biodiversity.
Conservation Evidence is an invaluable, free resource developed by the University of Cambridge, designed to assist decision-makers in the field of conservation. This platform provides practitioners, researchers, and conservationists with scientifically-backed insights that guide effective practices for maintaining and restoring biodiversity around the world. By compiling and presenting evidence-based data, Conservation Evidence ensures that conservation efforts are both impactful and sustainable.
To further strengthen the organisation's presence and ensure it is recognised globally across social media, publications, and conservation campaigns, Ian Paget was approached to design a new logo. The objective was to create a logo that not only reflected the authority and expertise of Conservation Evidence, but also captured the depth of its mission and the values at its core. The goal was to develop a visual identity that would establish the organisation as a trusted leader in the conservation field, enhancing its credibility and ensuring it resonates across various platforms and audiences.
When designing a logo for an organisation with a long name, I always recommend creating a symbol to accompany the logotype. Not only does this help ensure the brand remains recognisable at small sizes, where a full name might be hard to read, but it also allows for a more versatile identity. A well-designed symbol can be used independently across social media, app icons, merchandise, and other touchpoints where space is limited, while still maintaining brand recognition.
In the case of Conservation Evidence, this approach was especially important. The challenge wasn’t just about creating something simple, scalable, and distinctive... it was about capturing the essence of biodiversity in a single, minimal mark. That’s no small task when the subject spans ecosystems, species, landscapes, and scientific research. The symbol needed to strike a delicate balance: visually clean and iconic for practical use, yet rich in meaning to reflect the depth and impact of the organisation’s mission.
After a deep dive into the organisation’s purpose and audience, I developed a minimal, yet richly meaningful icon.
At first glance, it’s clean and simple, but look closer and you’ll find layers of meaning woven throughout:
This single mark brings together the core themes of Conservation Evidence in a way that is both practical and poetic... creating a logo that is bold, recognisable, and packed with meaning.
The resulting logo combines simplicity and meaning, offering a versatile and recognisable symbol that represents the depth of bidiversity; ecosystems, species, and scientific knowledge. It effectively conveys the organisation’s commitment to providing evidence-driven solutions for biodiversity conservation.
